Marl Pit Sunset

Published October 1, 1979 in Landscape

This one of the first images I took in 4×5 – having recently decided that none of the 120 cameras I had been using gave the results I wanted.

The place is a flooded marl pit just north of the road between Dexter and Chelsea, Michigan. Marl is naturally occurring calcium carbonate formerly applied to agricultural fields to alter the pH.

The camera was an Ikeda 4×5 field camera; the lens was a 90mm f/6.8 Angulon. The film is Ektachrome 100. If I ever had a record of the exposure it is long gone. So are the camera and the lens and I wish I had kept them both.
